Acknowledge your best people
How do you know if you are doing well as an employee? that your boss is happy with your performance? are you meeting the expectations? failing them or exceeding them?
Every company has a review/appraisal system which is communicated to employee on regular basis in personal meetings. There is a simple test,
The smaller this meeting the better you are performing
I was given this advice by a CEO who has been doing reviews for past 10 years. I have found this test to be extremely accurate. All the great people I know, never really had a formal “performance evaluation” meeting with their managers. Mostly, they were just communicated the evaluation verbally or in writing in very non-formal & friendly meetings. Detailed meetings were almost always carried out for people who were not performing well. So if your performance evaluation meeting is going beyond 15 minutes, you should be worried
The logic is quite simple; great people are self-motivated. They would rather spend their time working than boasting how good they were last quarter. A great performance usually requires no analysis. After all a guy performing well will continue to perform well unless acted upon by external factors
. A poor performance does require improvements and hence a deeper analysis.
The companies know this and usually focus their attention on lesser performers and neglect an important factor. Great people almost always see flaws in their work and are hardly satisfied with the quality. This quest for perfection is the quality that leads to great work. But leave them alone for long and they will convince themselves that they are producing crap.
This is why it is important for companies to periodically assure their great people of their value. The best way is to highlight the importance and impact of work they are producing. Do not leave them alone or you may lose them.
